Mingzhang Sun (b. 1990, Zhengzhou, China) is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in London. His diverse practice encompasses painting, drawing, sculpture, fashion and costume design, soft sculpture, installation, and performance art, all unified by a profound exploration of time, space, and the intricacies of being. Drawing inspiration from personal memories and his ever-evolving surroundings, Sun seeks to bridge cultural and linguistic divides through his art, seamlessly blending established artistic styles and techniques.
Having graduated from the prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and the University of the Arts London, Sun's talent has been recognized with numerous accolades, including the CAFA President's Choice Award (2013) and the UAL Excellence in Design and Realization for Performance Award (2017). Notably, he garnered international acclaim by winning the New Zealand WOW (World of WearableArt) Wearable Art Prize and the First-time Entrant Award in 2018 for his powerful piece "Hide & Seek."
Sun's artistic concerns often revolve around universal human experiences, delving into themes of nostalgia, identity, self-discovery, feelings, memories, emotions, and the fundamental need for connection. His paintings, characterized by a distinctive fusion of figurative expressionism and neo-romanticism, subtly incorporate elements of traditional Chinese landscape painting and calligraphy. Through figural distortion and elongated forms, he evokes a spectrum of emotions, from the depths of heartbreak to moments of profound solitude and hopeful reverence. Symbolism, often drawn from Chinese lore and mythology, enriches the narrative layers of his work.
His artworks have been showcased in numerous solo and group exhibitions across the UK, China, New Zealand, and Europe. Recent highlights include his solo exhibition "After Summer, Half" at the Orleans House Gallery in London (February-March 2025), presenting two distinct yet interconnected bodies of work that explore themes of transition, incompleteness, and the multifaceted nature of identity. Represented by Felstead Art and London Lighthouse Gallery & Studio, Mingzhang Sun continues to push creative boundaries, offering insightful perspectives on the human condition through his compelling and multifaceted artistic expressions.
